  • Fall 1985 Kurt meets Krist. They play in several bands together, including Stiff Woodies.
  • December 1987 Kurt, Krist and drummer Aaron Burckhard form the original lineup of Nirvana in Aberdeen, Washington.
  • January 23, 1988 Nirvana records a 10-song demo with the “Godfather of Grunge,” legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino. Sub Pop co-honcho Jonathan Poneman hears the tape and offers to put out a Nirvana single. The band accepts.
  • October 30, 1988 Kurt smashes his first guitar.
  • June 1989 Bleach is released on Sub Pop. Nirvana embarks on a month-long U.S. tour.
  • September 25, 1990 Dave Grohl, former drummer for Washinton, D.C.’s Scream, joins Nirvana.
  • October 1990 Nirvana briefly tours England with L7.
  • Winter 1991 Nirvana signs with DGC Records.
  • August 1991 Nirvana opens for Sonic Youth on a European festival tour, which includes a landmark performance at the Reading Festival. The tour is documented in the film 1991: The Year Punk Broke.

  • January 7, 1994 Nirvana plays the Seattle Arena. It will be the band’s last U.S. show.

  • November 2, 2002 You Know You’re Right #1 on Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart and stays there for four consecutive weeks.
  • November 23, 2004 The With The Lights Out box set featuring 3 CDs with over 60 previously unreleased recordings spanning the entire band era and a DVD featuring the bands home movies from their beginnings in Aberdeen all the way to secret recording sessions in Rio is released.
  • November 1, 2005 The Sliver – Best Of The Box single disc of audio highlights from With The Lights Out and three unreleased tracks is released.
  • November 7, 2006 Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! makes its DVD debut and is expanded. Originally conceived by Kurt Cobain the year after the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, now expanded to 83 minutes to include several previously unreleased performances.
  • Novemer 20, 2007 UNPLUGGED IN NY DVD is released nearly 14 years to the day of the filming of Nirvana’s landmark “MTV Unplugged” performance, features the complete, unedited 66-minute concert, rehearsal performances and MTV News interviews with the band and audience members.
  • November 3, 2009 Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine’s “100 Gigs That Shook The World” and voted as “Nirvana’s #1 Greatest Moment” by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana’s historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival complete performance is released on the LIVE AT READING DVD and CD.
  • November 3, 2009 Marking the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana’s debut album, Sub Pop re-issues the Platinum Certified Bleach. Includes the complete February 9. 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon.

Live and Loud is a live video released by American grunge band Nirvana in September 2013. It was released as part of the 20th anniversary of the band's third and final studio album, In Utero.

It showcases the entirety of the band's December 1993 live performance at Pier 48, Seattle which was recorded by MTV for "Live and Loud". The DVD also contains bonus footage from other performances from the In Utero tour.

The show in its entirety was previously unreleased although a shorter version had been previously broadcast on MTV,[4] and the audio of the song "Scentless Apprentice" appeared on the live compilation album From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah in 1996. As well as the standalone DVD release, a DVD and audio CD version of the show are available packaged together as part the limited edition Super Deluxe box set reissue of the In Utero album.

Live at the Paramount is a live video by the grunge band Nirvana released in 2011. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc as part of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind album. It showcases a live performance at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle from October 31, 1991. The footage is taken from the only Nirvana show ever to be shot on 16 mm film. The Blu-ray features uncompressed 48kHz/24-bit sound.

As well as the standalone DVD and Blu-ray releases, a DVD along with a CD audio version of the show are available packaged together as part of the limited edition Super Deluxe box set reissue of the Nevermind album.

Nirvana: Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! is a video album released by the grunge band Nirvana on laserdisc and VHS on November 15, 1994. The DVD version was released November 7, 2006.

The video was originally conceived by Kurt Cobain himself and it was to loosely chronicle the band's rise to fame and the Nevermind era.[1] When Kurt Cobain died in 1994 the video lay unfinished so remaining Nirvana band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic stepped in to finish it. The video includes live performances as well as interviews with the band.[1] Amongst the live performances is a "disturbing" performance of "Love Buzz" in which Cobain gets into a fight with an over aggressive bouncer.

Most of the live footage is from 1991 and 1992, with home video footage dating back to late-1990. The latest footage is from January 23, 1993 at the Hollywood Rock Festival in Brazil.

A rough outline of the video appears in the book "Journals", a published book of Kurt Cobain's journals.

With the Lights Out is a box set, containing three CDs and one DVD, of previously rare or unreleased material, including b-sides, demos, rough rehearsal recordings and live recordings, from the American rock band Nirvana. It was released in November 2004. The title was taken from the lyric, "With the lights out, it's less dangerous" from the band's 1991 "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single.

With the Lights Out set a record for single week sales of any box set, with 105,760 units sold. As of 2007, it has sold over 925,000 units in the United States alone, according to Nielson SoundScan. It has also been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The boxset features six CD singles from the band's two studio albums that were released on Geffen Records, Nevermind and In Utero. Four singles are from the Nevermind album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come as You Are", "In Bloom", "Lithium"), and two singles are from the In Utero album ("Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies"/"Rape Me"(double A-side). It does not include the third In Utero single, "Pennyroyal Tea", which was canceled after frontman Kurt Cobain's death.

Icon is a compilation album from the American grunge band Nirvana. It was released on August 31, 2010.

Overview
Icon is the band's second greatest hits collection. The album was part of the Icon series launched by Universal Music Enterprises, which featured greatest hits releases "from 30 major artists spanning rock, pop, R&B and country."

The album features "You Know You're Right", first released on the band's 2002 greatest hits album, Nirvana, as well as the four singles from the band's 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come as You Are", "Lithium", "In Bloom") and three singles from their 1993 follow-up album In Utero ("Heart-Shaped Box", "Pennyroyal Tea", "Rape Me"), plus one album track from In Utero ("Dumb"). The album also includes the single from the MTV Unplugged In New York album ("About a Girl") and the unplugged version of "All Apologies", which was a promotional single.

Sliver: The Best of the Box is a compilation album by the American rock band, Nirvana, released in November 2005. It contains 19 tracks from the band's 2004 rarities box set, With the Lights Out, as well as three previously unreleased recordings: "Spank Thru," from the 1985 "Fecal Matter" demo, a 1990 studio recording of "Sappy", and a 1991 boombox demo of "Come as You Are".

Sliver: The Best of the Box opened at number 21 on the Billboard 200. It was released on October 25, 2005 in Japan as Sliver: The Best of Nirvana +3 in reference to the three previously unreleased songs. As of 2007, Sliver: The Best of the Box has sold over 300,000 copies in the U.S. alone

Artwork
According to Rolling Stone, the title and cover photograph for Sliver: The Best of the Box were chosen by Frances Bean, the daughter of Cobain and Courtney Love. The cover photograph depicts a cardboard box filled with Nirvana and Cobain tapes, including a copy of the Fecal Matter demo. Some of the tapes have spilled out of the box and are strewn across the floor.

Nirvana is a "best-of" compilation album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released in October 2002.

Background

Nirvana was released following the settlement of a long-standing legal dispute between Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. Much of the dispute centered around the song "You Know You're Right" which was recorded during the band's final studio session, in January 1994. Novoselic and Grohl had wanted to release it on a long-delayed Nirvana rarities box set. However, Love blocked the song's release, and sued Novoselic and Grohl over control of Nirvana's legacy. Love's lawsuit maintained that "You Know You're Right" was a "potential 'hit' of extraordinary artistic and commercial value." She believed that "You Know You're Right" would be "wasted" on a box set, and instead belonged on a single-disc compilation similar to The Beatles' 1. In September 2002, it was announced by the Nirvana camp that the lawsuit had been settled, and that "You Know You're Right" would be released on "Nirvana, a one-CD history of the band.

Incesticide is a compilation album by the American rock band Nirvana. Incesticide consists of their 1990 single "Sliver", demos, outtakes, covers, and radio broadcast recordings. At the time, all of the material on Incesticide was circulating within fan communities (albeit in lower quality). It was widely reported in the music press that the band wanted to offer fans a higher-quality alternative, but in the book Cobain Unseen, Charles R. Cross writes that Kurt Cobain agreed to the release of this compilation because he was allowed complete control over the album's artwork. The album was released on December 14, 1992 in Europe, and December 15, 1992 in the United States and eventually reached number thirty-nine on the Billboard 200. Since the songs were recorded in different sessions, when Nirvana did not have a stable formation yet, this album includes recordings by four different drummers: Chad Channing, Dan Peters, Dale Crover, and Dave Grohl.

Live at Reading is a live CD/DVD by the American grunge band Nirvana released on November 2, 2009, chronicling its 1992 performance at the Reading Festival. Bootlegged for years following the performance, the new issues present the performance for the first time mastered and color corrected.

The performance of the band's 1992 hit single "Lithium" was previously released on the home video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! in 1994. The performance of "tourette's" was previously released on the live compilation From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah in 1996.

Live at Reading marks the first time on a Nirvana release that Chet Powers receives songwriting credit for the use of his lyrics from the song "Get Together" as the intro for "Territorial Pissings". It features Cobain wheeled out on stage by music journalist Everett True.

From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah is a live album by the American alternative rock band Nirvana. It was released on October 1, 1996 and features live performances recorded from 1989 to 1994. As opposed to Nirvana's previous live album, MTV Unplugged in New York (1994), which features an acoustic performance, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah is a compilation of live electric performances.

The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200. It spent 25 weeks on the chart and became the band's sixth platinum album since 1991. As of 2001, it has sold over 1.15 million copies in the United States alone.

MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American grunge band Nirvana. It features an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993, for the television series MTV Unplugged. The show was directed by Beth McCarthy and first aired on the cable television network MTV on December 16, 1993. As opposed to traditional practice on the television series, Nirvana played a setlist composed of mainly lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, Meat Puppets (during which they were joined by two members of the group onstage), and Lead Belly.

MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released following the death of Kurt Cobain. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the group's most successful posthumous release, having been certified 5x platinum in the United States by 1997.[1] It also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. The performance was released on DVD in 2007.

In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, on DGC Records. Nirvana intended the record to diverge significantly from the polished production of its previous album, Nevermind (1991). To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired producer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The music was recorded quickly with few studio embellishments, and the song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame.

Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated in the press that DGC might not release the album in its original state, as the record label felt that the result was not commercially viable. Although Nirvana publicly denied the statements, the group was not fully satisfied with the sound Albini had captured. Albini declined to alter the album further, and ultimately the band hired R.E.M producer Scott Litt to make minor changes to the album's sound and remix the singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies".

Upon release, In Utero entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and received critical acclaim as a drastic departure from Nevermind. The record has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold 15 million copies worldwide.

Nevermind is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind was the group's first release on DGC Records. Frontman Kurt Cobain sought to make music outside the restrictive confines of the Seattle grunge scene, drawing influence from groups such as the Pixies and their use of song volume dynamics.

Bleach is the debut studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released in June 1989 through the independent record label Sub Pop. The main recording sessions took place at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Washington between December 1988 and January 1989.

Bleach was well received by critics, but failed to chart in the U.S. upon its original release. The album was re-released internationally by Geffen Records in 1992 following the success of Nirvana's second album, Nevermind (1991). The re-release debuted at number 89 on the Billboard 200, and peaked at number 33 on the UK Albums Chart and 34 on the Australian albums chart.
